| Recorded in 1993, the two previously unreleased
songs reflect the cool, spontaneous presentation. They are archaic but not outdated. Powerful by their useof space and tension, never through the crude escalation of noise. Both are mesmeric, but not by mind numbing 'techno' rhythms which act like drugs. JOJ's music seems to aid clarity. A Carrier Pigeon uses what sounds like a thumb piano to provide a matrix on which to build a delicate musical structure. Chako's incantation is distant, sounding like it was sung down a telephone line. Ritual 2 is even more haunting, possessing a vast atmospheric sound stage. Chako sounds lost in the darkness of a deep chasm, flutes imitate the movement of air and the innards of a piano and / or metal percussion provide primeval eruptions. It's music on the threshold of abstraction, all the more effective because of its sparing use of hi-tech instrumentation. Also, Ritual 2 seems to build on the achievements of Ritual 1, another rare JOJ track which appeared on the Ohrendes Kaiser Hirohito double CD omnibus set from DOM Records. |
